Lines You Don’t Forget: The Traitor Baru Cormorant

traitor-baruSometimes books have lines you don’t ever forgot, even if you never finish the book.

I haven’t finished The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. But I read this line days and days ago and I find myself thinking of it at odd moments.

“You. None of these men have husbands. They hate husbands.” She lowered her forehead to his. “He’s gone, Solit. I looked—I looked so long—”

When this happened, it was because of the class on Scientific Society and Incrasticism that Baru could only think to ask: “Was Salm my real father? Or was he only a sodomite?”

It shows just deeply she has absorbed the culture and values of the colonizers, and just how easy that is to do, all without her parents realizing. Or hold her back in anyway.

It is just really astonishing.

The first chapter is here: http://www.tor.com/2015/05/26/excerpt-the-traitor-baru-cormorant-seth-dickinson/

The line is here in this excerpt above. Do you have the same reaction to it that I do?

With only five thousand of us in the world, survival is everything. We cannot stagnate. We can be strong, true to our nature, and yet still consider changes that augment that strength and nature.

A perfect two lines for my teasers this time!

Yet . . . by capitalizing our names and the names of others, we are declaring that we are special, that we have a greater identity or are of greater import to the world than do those objects or creatures who the share the same common name, such as trees, or rocks, or pebbles, or ants, or cattle. At times, people name animals, especially those that are loved or that have served faithfully, and those names accord them somehow a higher place than animals that bear no names.

Still reading the same book as last week! I haven’t made much progress, but the week’s been very busy.

My Teasers:

He nodded, glancing at me. “You sound relieved.”

“I am. I mean, vampires can be nasty, but I wouldn’t put them in the same league as something that’s crawled from the gates of hell.”

My Teasers:

The house still smelled of death.

Two months had passed since Mom’s murder, but the air still echoed with her agony and I knew if I breathed deep enough, I’d catch the hint of old blood.

My Teasers:

The older folk in the area were still boycotting McDonald’s to protest losing their local watering hole, but I couldn’t see the point. Especially since those of us who liked to party late could get something to eat at all hours.

My teaser:

Male presumption of entitlement, Timothy, has nothing to do with sexual orientation. It is a characteristic of certain moody, confused men – homo, hetro – who never left their mommies. I am not one of them.
