Characters! Sometimes you read a book more for the characters than the plot. Lots of times, in fact. If the characters suck, oftentimes I stop reading.
If some characters come out in a new book, I would read it and I don’t really need to know anything else. Do you have favorite characters like that?
Five of my favorite characters:
- Eve Dallas from the In Death series by JD Robb
- Daemon from Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop
- Miles Vorkosigan from Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
- Mercy Thompson from Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
- Meg Corbyn from The Others by Anne Bishop
For me, a story lives and dies by its characters. So, yeah.
yeah, for me too. I think that is true for most people.
I agree. The characters have to be likeable and they have to grab me or I lose interest in the story. Too many books out there to spend time on a book I won’t enjoy.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on characters. Totally agree. I love Alice in the series Luther personally; Eve and Vilanelle in Killing Eve and Rider in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings among a host of others… Claire and Bree in Outlander series; Isabel Dalhousie in the Sunday Philosophers Club by Alexander Mc Call Smith is a special favourite.
Have an inspiring May. Take care.
