I’m writing a script set in 1870′s Canada. If Quentin Tarrantino can use “nigger” eight times in his movie “Django”, I’ll use it too, albeit as a derogatory term. Since the word is shunned and no longer in use, at some point it is historic (like Shakespeare’s plays?) and therefore accepted as a part of history. No?

Well, you can always set it down if it’s boring. Never hurts to try out a new book. You can do all the research in the world, and still hate it after everyone says they love it … and vice versa
